If you are a beginner crocheter, you are likely learning how to make double crochet stitches (dc in UK terminology)/ single crochet stitches (sc in the US).
This is a core stitch to learn. Follow the tutorial below and look for the photos that explain how to crochet it and the anatomy of a double crochet/ single crochet stitch.

Here’s how make double crochet/ single crochet stitches:
Step 1 – Place the hook through the indicated stitch. This is at the top edge of the fabric and is made up of a front loop and a back loop and the hook goes under both.
Step 2 – Yarn around hook (yrh). Make sure the yarn is going over the top of your hook and not underneath it.
Step 3 – Pull up a loop. This is done by hooking the yarn that was just placed over the hook and pulling it from the back of the fabric, through the stitch and to the front of the fabric. This will leave you with two loops on your hook).
Step 4 – Yarn around hook again.
Step 5 – Pull yarn just placed over hook through the two loops that were on the hook. One loop left on hook and that completes a double crochet.
Step 5 continued – It is well worth looking at the anatomy of the stitch so that you can see what happens when you turn to work the next row. If you are working in rounds, all of the stitches will present as Vs because the work isn’t being turned to work in rows.
