If you are a beginner crocheter, you are likely learning how to make half treble crochet stitches (htr in UK terminology)/ half double crochet stitches (hdc in the US).
This is a core stitch to learn. Follow the tutorial below and look for the photos that explain how to crochet it and the anatomy of a half treble crochet stitch.
Here’s how make Half Treble crochet/ Half Double crochet stitches:

Step 1 – Yarn around hook (yrh). Make sure the yarn is going over the top of your hook and not underneath it.

Step 2 – Place the hook through the indicated stitch. This is at the top edge of the fabric and is made up of a front loop and a back loop and the hook goes under both.

Step 3 – Yarn around hook and pull up a loop. This is done by hooking the yarn that was just placed over the hook and pulling it from the back of the fabric, through the stitch and to the front of the fabric. This will leave you with three loops on your hook).

Step 4 – Yarn around hook again.

Step 5 – Pull yarn just placed over hook through the three loops that were on the hook. One loop left on hook and that completes a half treble crochet stitch.

Step 6 – It is well worth looking at the anatomy of the stitch so that you can see where the hook should be placed to create neat half treble rows of crochet. At Step 2, the hook should be placed just under the front and back loops at the top edge of the fabric.

Step 6 continued – If the hook is placed in the stitch hole further down, it breaks the neat horizontal row that you should get with half treble crochets.
