When you first start crocheting, there are SO many new words, terms, sizes and intricacies to get to grips with.
It’s important to understand some of these differences from the very beginning of your crochet journey and I am here to make your crochet hook conversions easy!
I am UK based and we use the metric system with hooks being sized every 0.25mm (up to 4.5mm), 0.5mm (up to 7mm) or 1mm depending on how large the hook is.
The US and Canada have similar hook sizes to the UK (metric is also used throughout Europe), but with some hook sizes missing across all three countries.
It is worth noting that many European designers will use a 3mm hook for 4ply, fingering weight yarn (approximately 100g/400m/437yds) and there is no conversion for US hooks. If you don’t purchase a 3mm hook from UK/ EU or a size 11 from Canada, then try using a C2 or D3 hook to get gauge.
You might have been passed vintage metal crochet hooks from a relative or picked them up in a charity/ thrift shop. These are based on a much older sizing system that I won’t confuse you with. If you want to use these hooks, your best bet is to buy a reliable hook gauge and to properly size them up yourself.
Hooks used for a prolonged period of time will wear down, so that is why I suggest sizing your vintage hooks yourself, particularly if they are well worn.
