Strata Blanket

Retro striped crochet blanket with knotted fringe.

This simple striped blanket is made with an aran/ worsted weight yarn and a large hook to make a warm, soft and snuggly fabric. The rows of stitches used help to create vertical and horizontal V stitches, giving the blanket texture, drape and interest.

It’s finished off with easy rounds of double crochet for the border. If you want extra detail, you can add a macrame knotted fringe too!

Construction

Worked in rows. Border is then added in rounds of single crochet (US sc), then an optional knotted fringe can be added.

Special Stitches

Back Bumps/ third loops: a chain is made up of the front and back loops that sit on the top and a third loop that sits on the bottom. To work a back bump/ third loop, turn the foundation chain upside down and place your hook under that third loop.

Starting htr: this is an alternative to using a turning chain and always counts as your first st. Extend loop a little and make a dc. Place hook through left leg of the dc just made (this is the leg at the front of your work, not the top of the stitch where you would normally work into) then yrh, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook) and then yrh, and pull through both remaining loops.

HBhtr: yrh, insert hook into next st, then yrh, and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), pull last loop (closest to hook) through second loop on hook (2 loops on hook), then yrh, and pull through remaining 2 loops.

Dbl ss: place hook through first st, then yrh, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), place hook through next st, yrh and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), pull last loop through other 2 loops on hook to finish st. Next double ss uses last st just used for first part of st. Rep to end of row, finish with a dc in final st (same one that your hook was last through).

Starting dc: extend loop a little and make a dc (this counts as your first stitch).

Wc: similar to a double crochet, but hook is placed through V at front of stitch and out through upside-down V at back, instead of under front and back loops on the top of stitch.

Invisible join: thread yarn onto tapestry needle. Skip first st of rnd and place needle from front to back through both loops of 2nd st, pull yarn so it sits on top of front loop of skipped st. Place needle from front to back through back loop of last st of rnd, pull yarn so it sits on top of back loop of skipped st. The sewn join should match the tension of the two sts either side. Turn to WS and weave in end, sewing in same direction of your crocheted rnds to keep tension on the join.

Notes

Pattern conventions: The pattern is set up for right-handed users. I place my yarn over the hook (not under) as I create stitches throughout this pattern.

Colour changes: These are always made on the final yrh of the st before the new colour is required.

Strata Blanket Pattern

With larger hook and Yarn A, make 120ch. Change to smaller hook.

Row 1 (RS): working in back bumps, starting htr in first ch from hook, pm (move up ea row), HBhtr to end, turn. 120 sts

Row 2 (WS): 1dbl ss, pm (move up ea row), dbl ss to end, 1dc in same st just worked to finish row, turn.

Row 3: starting htr, HBhtr to end, turn.

Row 4: dbl ss to end, 1dc in same st just worked to finish row changing to Yarn B on final yrh, turn. Cut Yarn A leaving a 10cm/ 4″ tail.

Rows 5-8: Rep rows 3 & 4 another 2 times, changing to Yarn C on final yrh of final st. Cut Yarn B leaving a 10cm/ 4″ tail.

Row 9: starting dc, dc to end, turn.

Row 10: starting dc, wc to end, changing to Yarn A on final yrh of final st, turn. Cut Yarn C leaving a 10cm/ 4″ tail.

Row 11: starting htr, HBhtr to end, turn.

Row 12: dbl ss to end, 1dc in same st just worked to finish row changing to Yarn C on final yrh, turn. Cut Yarn A leaving a 10cm/ 4″ tail.

Row 13: starting dc, dc to end, turn.

Row 14: starting dc, wc to end, changing to Yarn A on final yrh of final st, turn. Cut Yarn C leaving a 10cm/ 4″ tail.

Rows 15-98: Rep Rows 1-14 another 6 times, with Row 1 worked into sts not chains and changing/ cutting colours according to the table below.

Rows 99-106: Rep Rows 1-8, with Row 1 worked into sts not chains and changing/ cutting colours according to the table below. Change to Yarn C on final st of Row 106, ready for Border rnds.

Strata Blanket Border

Change to larger hook.

Rnd 1 (RS): Continuing with Yarn C, starting dc, pm as beg of rnd (move up ea rnd), dc to end of row, remove pm, 2ch (pm as corner ch-sp and move up ea rnd), rotate blanket 90°, 1dc in side of ea row, 2ch (pm as corner ch-sp and move up ea rnd), rotate blanket 90°, 1dc in ea foundation ch, 2ch (pm as corner ch-sp and move up ea rnd), rotate blanket 90°, 1dc in side of ea row, 2ch. 460 sts O

Rnd 2: starting dcBLO (this joins Rnd 1 and starts next rnd), *dcBLO to next pm, (1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in ch-sp; rep from * another 3 times, dcBLO to beg of rnd pm. 468 sts O

Rnds 3-5: Rep Rnd 2, increasing by 8 sts ea rnd. O O O 492 sts

Wet or steam block your blanket and then weave in ends. Do this before you add the fringe.

Strata Blanket Knotted Fringe

The fringe is added down the striped sides of the blanket using a series of simple knots. Start by preparing 240 x 50cm/ 20″ lengths of Yarn C. See Supporting Images below.

Step 1: holding two of the 50cm/ 20″ strands together, fold them in half. With blanket RS up and all row ends facing you, place your crochet hook through the left-hand corner ch-sp, from the back (WS) up to the front (RS). Place middle of folded strands onto your hook and pull through about 5cm/ 2″ to the WS. Place strand ends through the loop and tighten to secure onto your blanket edge. This is known as a Lark’s Head Knot. Skip a st, then work a Lark’s Head Knot every second st and in corner ch-sp on right-hand side. Each Lark’s Head Knot will create four strands of yarn. See Supporting Images 24-26.

Step 2: the next section of knots is worked by pairing two strands from one set with two strands of the next set to the right. This creates a triangle pattern. Set the two left-hand strands from your first knot aside, you won’t add them into a knot until Step 3.

Working from left to right, split the four strands from your first Lark’s Head Knot into two sets of 2. Do the same with the next set of strands to the right. You are now going to work with the two right-hand strands from your first Lark’s Head Knot (A) and the two left-hand strands from your second Lark’s Head Knot (B) to knot them together.

Using your left hand, place your index and middle fingers under strands A. Using your right hand, place strands B around the front of your fingers and over the top of strands A, then pull strands B around the back of your fingers and underneath both sets of strands. Place the strand B ends between your two fingers to keep them in place. You have created a loop around your two fingers with strands B. Using your right hand, pull the loop up and over your fingers, pulling the strand ends through the loop at the same time. Gently pull the knot tight, trying to keep it about 2.5cm/ 1″ from the edge of your blanket.

Repeat this knot all the way along your fringe, taking care to make the knot at the same place each time so that you end up with an even line of knots along your fringe. When you get to the final knot, you will have two right-hand strands remaining. Don’t do anything with these until Step 3.

Step 3: Repeating the knot used in Step 2, you will now reunite the strands that were initially paired up in the Step 1 Lark’s Head Knot. Starting with the two left-most strands that were unused in Step 2 (these will now be strands A), knot them together with the next two strands to the right (strands B). Continue along to the end, where you should be left with two strands that were worked in Step 2 and the two unused strands at the end, knot these together.

Step 4: Lay your blanket on a large, flat surface and comb the fringe with your fingers to make sure the strands are straight. Using a measuring tape and a sharp pair of scissors, work out how long you want the fringe to be from the edge of the blanket and cut to that length, moving the measuring tape along every 5cm/ 2″ to get a neat edge. I cut the fringe of the blanket at a length of 18cm/ 7″.

Repeat Steps 1-4 on the opposite edge of the blanket.
