When you first start knitting and crocheting, there are SO many new words, terms and weights to get to grips with.
It’s important to understand some of these differences from the very beginning of your crafting journey and I am here to make your yarn weight conversions easy!
The US, UK and Australia all have different categories for yarn weights. The Yarn Weight Conversion Chart below gives an indication of the different terms used and the spectrum of metres/ yards per 100g for that term.
For clarity, I have also added the symbols used in the US because they are often used globally on ball bands and in patterns.
As a basic rule, I suggest completely ignoring what a’ yarn brand has called a yarn. I have seen aran/ 10ply/ worsted weight yarn and 4py/ /5ply/ sport being called ‘DK weight yarn’.
Instead, look at the meters/ yards per 100g when you are looking for a substitute yarn – this is a far safer way of understanding what a yarn is and which hook or needle size to use.
