Whip stitch is a nice way to visibly join crochet seams together. With a contrast colour, it creates a feature of the join. With the same colour as the seam crochet, it blends in.

This video shows you how to whip stitch together four crocheted squares. The steps can be used for seaming up all types of crochet though.
