Is there a best way to make a slip knot for knitting and crochet?
Although there are many ways to tie a slip knot, there is one essential element – which end of the yarn is pulled up through the loop. It should be the working end that is attached to your ball/cake of yarn, not the loose end that will eventually be woven in.
Does it really make a difference?
Yes is does. If the pull through loop uses the loose end, it can be pulled tightly, which could lead to puckering. Even worse, for crochet it could be pulled so tightly that you loose that stitch and your stitch could is off before you have really started the project.
