Starting treble decrease stitches (starting tr2togs) are used when a 1 stitch decrease is required at the beginning of a row.

Here’s how to crochet starting tr2tog (Starting dc2tog):

Step 1 – Pull the loop on the hook up a little, then double (single US) crochet in first stitch.

Step 1 continued – You have just made a starting dc (sc). The front of the stitch is made up of a V, which is not the same as the front and back loops at the top of the stitch just made.

Step 2 – Place hook through left leg of V on the front of the stitch just made, then yarn around hook.

Step 3 – Pull up a loop (two loops on hook), then yarn around hook.

Step 4 – Pull through one loop (two loops on hook), then yarn around hook.

Step 5 – Place hook through next stitch, yarn around hook and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).

Step 6 – Yarn around hook and pull through two loops (3 loops left on hook).

Step 7 – Yarn around hook and pull through all three loops to finish the Starting Treble Decrease.

Step 7 continued – If you look at the anatomy of the stitch, you should clearly see where the columns of the two stitches decreased into one stitch at the top which can easily be worked into on the next row.
